Impact Alliance was founded in 2019 with two inaugural events: the Global Solutions Coference and Goosechase UW.
GLOBAL SOLUTIONS CONFERENCE | MARCH 2019
On March 16th, 2019, over 150 people were involved in the Impact Alliance’s inaugural Global Solutions Conference held in the Science Teaching Complex at the University of Waterloo. The one-day event was presented by the Impact Alliance in partnership with the Waterloo Global Science Initiative (WGSI), Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Canada, and the University of Waterloo Sustainability Office.
Dean Jean Andrey, Dean of the Faculty of Environment welcomed the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, who opened the conference by presenting remarks. After, Dominique Souris, Founder and Executive Director of Youth Climate Lab made a keynote presentation followed by a Q&A where attendees engaged in a meaningful dialogue to dig deeper into the issues surrounding the SDGs.
To share industry insight on sustainable development and its implications, a panel of experts with diverse backgrounds in sustainability moderated by Dean Jean Andrey stimulated discussion on a variety of topics facilitated by a Q&A between attendees. The panel sparked conversation between panelists and audience to advance understanding of various topics and answer questions.
Participants chose one of seven different workshops each with a unique theme. The first hour allowed for workshop attendees to understand theme and its details through presentations, powerpoints, videos and other forms of communication. A booth fair in between represented 13 different SDGs with 14 student clubs and community organizations holding booths to share their work and inspire participants to join in on the action.
The conference was closed with workshop presentations and with the Dean of Engineering, Pearl Sullivan, introducing the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Government House Leader and MP for Waterloo who presented remarks.
GOOSECHASE UW | MARCH 2019
On March 11th 2019, a week-long scavenger hunt at the University of Waterloo gathered 400 students, faculty and staff. The hunt featured 35 on-campus clubs and services, hosting online and offline activities to enhance collaboration and awareness for sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Each club and service was aligned with a Sustainable Development Goal to showcase their on-going work to advance development at the university. Employees, staff and students from all faculties on campus competed for a grand prize worth $600.
The hunt featured ‘Our Sustainable Future’, a photography exhibition focusing on the SDGs. The exhibition features the works of secondary school students from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) presented in partnership with the Aga Khan Museum. This initiative was inspired by the work of The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, who has been championing the SDGs as a platform to help build a more resilient world that works for everyone.
