CERTIFICATION PROGRAM | WINTER 2021

To fulfil one of the three Learn requirements of the SDG Students Program Certificate, Impact Alliance hosted a certification program for the virtual course "Transforming Our World: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals".

Members met weekly from February 24 to April 1 to share their learnings of different modules of the course. The Education Officer divided roles based on the varying topics in each chapter of the course. These topics were then turned into tasks and each participating members would be choose a task to take notes and present them in the meetings.

Members were not only able to expand their knowledge on the SDGs, but also had the opportunity to connect with other members in the virtual learning environment. Completing the course was also beneficial to check off a requirement needed to accomplish the SDG Students Program Certificate.

This initiative was led by Asser Sigmund Ang, Impact Alliance's Education Officer.

VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP | MARCH 2021

vft1.jpg

On March 22, 2021 - World Water Day, Impact Alliance hosted an online, virtual field trip to the capital city of Colombia and its national park Chingaza, which was available on The Nature Conservancy platform.

Members learned about the SDG 6 and the importance of water in a fun educational way which allowed them to reflect upon their activities. The event educated hub members on the importance of ecosystems in providing and filtering water. Along the way, members explored where water comes from, and got a better understanding of how nature, people and water are connected, and possible spark thoughts on how they could help protect water in their hometown.

It was also encouraged to write an Op-Ed on SDG 6 or any SDG related topic concerning their local community for the SDG Students Program Certificate. Blog resources were shared in the context of Canada to help members get ideas.

This initiative was led by Farhana Priana, Impact Alliance's External Community Officer.

The SDG Impact Challenge was a solutions hackathon which took place virtually on March 20 and 21, 2021 and was organized by Impact Alliance - University of Waterloo’s SDG Student Hub in partnership with Global Spark.

Three partner organizations (the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change, Food4Kids Waterloo Region, and the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy) provided problem questions each targeting different United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Working in teams of 4, students had 24 hours to develop a solution that could be implemented in the community, to address one of the problem questions.

This event allowed participating students, from different faculties and backgrounds, to hear from passionate speakers, connect with each other and share their ideas and past experiences. They also got to learn about and engage with the SDGs and with the three local partner organizations. In addition, the participants got to develop a number of skills including teamwork, problem-solving and critical thinking, research and development, and communication skills. These transferable skills can be useful for implementing community projects. Many great solutions were developed during the SDG Impact Challenge. Winning teams were offered the opportunity and support to implement their solutions. This taste of social impact work would further social, environmental and economical sustainability in the Waterloo community by taking an idea and implementing it as a solution.

Interested in learning more about the SDG Impact Challenge? Check out our Event Page that has details such as the Agenda, Speakers, Problem Questions, Prizes, and Judging Criteria.

To check out the final submissions we received, check out this Google Folder. We gave away $900 CAD worth of prizes to the winners (click on the team to learn more about their solution):

NETFLIX NIGHTS | FEBRUARY - MARCH 2021

Impact Alliance hosted 4 online, virtual watching parties to watch 4 out of 8 episodes of Down to Earth with Zac Efron on Netflix. Group members had discussions on the different topics throughout watching the episodes as they related to the SDGs (e.g. importance of water, our plastic consumption, and renewable energy).

This allowed for a fun, and educational way to learn about the SDGs with a familiar actor. Participants enjoyed learning in this informal setting!

“It’s fun that we get to watch together and discuss”

“This episode really allowed me to think about what it really means to have a sustainable food system. My main takeaway was that we have become very disconnected with where our food comes from, and seeing people forage for their own food was an interesting thing to watch.” - on Episode 4, "Sardinia"

This initiative was led by Jacqueline Harper, Impact Alliance's Internal Community Officer.
